The levain is tucked away in the fridge (with 100g dried and frozen) and my bread baking accoutrements are all put away. Over the past two weeks, I've baked about a dozen loaves of bread (some were too enticing to make it into the freezer). Even though it was, at times, grueling, my love of bread baking helped me forget about my pain and anxieties. I tried a variety of new recipes, both whole-grain and sourdough; but the general consensus is that Lauren Chattman's "Intensely Flavored Sourdough Baguettes" from her book Bread Making, Crafting the Perfect Loaf from Crust to Crumb is the favorite. I modified it to make two regular size loaves out of each batch. I stocked up on my favorite comfort foods, homemade chicken noodle soup and turkey pot pies (I prefer chicken, but Greg's mom happened to have a turkey breast in the freezer). In addition, I froze individual servings of chili and boozy cupcakes. Heidi's making beef stew, and my wonderful neighbor will be bringing dinner one night. Greg's an excellent cook, so we've got food-stuffs covered. It's funny that on my list of what I can and can't do after the surgery included when I can resume sex, but I was more concerned about when I can resume baking. I'm supposed to be up and around as much as possible, so hopefully I'll be back in the kitchen within a few weeks. As I look around the clean kitchen with its counters free of flour, bread stones, parchment paper and pans, and the mixer and grain mill tucked into their corners, ...
